NSL to Implement the Shootout for the 2024 Season
The National Squash League is updating the overtime rules that will be in effect for the 2024 season. If the score is 2-2 after 3 periods of play, teams will now enter into a sudden death Shootout. The structure is as follows:
Teams will set their players in order 1, 2, and 3.
Each player will face off for one point according to the order, repeating if necessary.
The first team to 3 points wins the Shootout and the overall match.
The Shootout concept was first conceived before the NSL Beta Match in spring of 2023, but neither of the two showcase matches (despite coming down to the wire) went to overtime. That all changed during Draft Weekend, when the Saturday exhibition finished 2-2 after 3 periods. League executives decided to trial the Shootout, and team coaches Jack and Avi (NSL Next stars of the weekend) put their rosters in order. Team Jack stormed to a 2-0 lead, with Ramit Tandon clinching the first point against Victor Crouin and Andrew Douglas putting his team on the brink of victory with a win over Spencer Lovejoy. Team Avi came back to tie the score 2-2, and the final Shootout rally saw Team Jack’s Youssef Ibrahim up against Team Avi’s Matias Knudsen in a sudden death winner takes all point. Knudsen hit a winner past a diving Ibrahim to clinch the match, and the crowd went bananas. Not a single discussion was had- the Shootout was here to stay.
